THE LEVEL OF POLITENESS IN ACADEMIC WEB CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN STUDENTS AND LECTURERS AS AN IMAGE OF THE DECLINING SENSE OF DISTANCE IN INTERNET COMMUNICATION

Summary

By analyzing the collected research material, the author tried to settle whether any differences between eye-to-eye and virtual communication exist in the relation student – academic lecturer. According to the research, there are numerous cases which confirm the thesis that people seem to ignore the rules of everyday communication in e-mails. By all means, students are avoiding the traditional greetings, trying to change them into less official ones. Such phenomenon gives an image of today’s web-culture and loosening of traditional rules of communicating with professors. Worth mentioning are also the psychological mechanisms, which function by using the internet: sense of anonymity and lack of direct contact are the major factors that allow young people to behave in the ways that are almost impossible in an eye-to-eye communication with a lecturer.
