Brexit creates a risk which cannot be fully predicted, with consequences we cannot fully anticipate today. At the same time, it is the realisation of a catastrophic scenario which means that EU disintegration has become practically irreversible. Brexit forces all other member states to answer the question of whether they want to support the goal stated in the Treaty of Lisbon – of an “ever closer union”, i.e. even closer integration? Or will they choose fragmentation of the integration.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the risks associated with Brexit and potential disintegration of the EU. This objective was met by discussing: the issue of European disintegration in selected political, legal and economic terms, the notification of leaving the EU submitted by a member state, based on the example of Great Britain and the implications resulting from Brexit for Great Britain and the EU. The paper presents quantitative results of own studies on the risk of disintegration of the EU resulting from Brexit.

Brexit stanowi czynnik ryzyka o niemożliwych dziś do przewidzenia skutkach. Jest równocześnie spełnieniem katastroficznego scenariusza, który sprawia, że dezintegracja UE staje się praktycznie nieodwracalna. Brexit zmusza wszystkie pozostałe kraje członkowskie do odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy chcą wspierać cel wyrażony w Traktacie z Lizbony – „ever closer union”, czyli coraz ściślejszą integrację, czy też decydują się na fragmentaryzację integracji.
Celem opracowania jest analiza ryzyka Brexitu oraz potencjalnej dezintegracji UE. Realizację celu oparto na omówieniu problemu dezintegracji Europy w wybranych doktrynach polityczno-prawnych i ekonomicznych, notyfikacji wyjścia z UE kraju członkowskiego na przykładzie Wielkiej Brytanii oraz implikacji wynikających z Brexitu dla Wielkiej Brytanii i UE. W pracy zaprezentowano ilościowe wyniki badań własnych w zakresie ryzyka dezintegracji UE wynikające z Brexitu.
