Streszczenie
Jednym z największych wyzwań XXI wieku stało się zagospodarowanie odpadów, w tym szczególnie komunalnych, zwłaszcza gdy ich ilość wzrasta w lawinowym tempie. Dodatkowo sytuację pogarsza fakt, że większość odpadów nie jest powtórnie wykorzystywana, lecz trafia bezpośrednio na składowiska. Stanowi to znaczne zagrożenie nie tylko ze względu na wzrost liczby składowisk, ale przede wszystkim na zagrożenie dla środowiska naturalnego (gleb, wody, atmosfery). Również w Polsce ilość odpadów komunalnych wzrasta, a dominującym sposobem ich zagospodarowania jest deponowanie na składowiskach. Stąd celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ich stanu i stopnia zagospodarowania w latach 2009–2010.

MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT – THE CHALLENGE OF THE XXI CENTURY
Summary
One of the biggest challenges of the XXI century has become a waste management including in particular municipal waste especially when their number is increasing at an alarming rate. The situation is worsened by the fact that most of the generated waste is not reused but goes directly to landfill. This form of “management” of waste represents a significant threat not only because of the increase in the number of landfills but also a threat to the environment (soil, water, atmosphere). Also in Poland the amount of municipal waste is increasing and the dominant process of their disposal is depositing in landfills.
