SIZE AND STRUCTURE OF THE CENTRAL BUDGET AS EXPRESSION OF THE GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IN CONTEMPORARY ECONOMY
Summary
In each contemporary economy that assigns certain functions to the government, the latter has a role to play. Formal expression of the government’s role and functions in the economy is the size and structure of its budget. The aim of this study is to present the role of the government and its functions as discussed in the contemporary theory of economics, as well as to analyse the empirical role of the government in Poland in the early 21st century. Theoretical considerations have been based on modern literature on the subject, mainly Polish authors, since the research part refers to today’s conditions in Polish economy. The empirical part of the study analyses the data describing the government’s income and spending as well as their structures (in various cross-sections) in Poland in the years 2000–2006.
