Streszczenie
Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza procesu konwergencji gospodarczej Polski w Unii Europejskiej i w relacji do krajów o największym potencjale gospodarczym w latach 1999–2011 oraz ocena możliwości zmniejszania luki rozwojowej w perspektywie 2040 roku z uwzględnieniem niektórych prognoz do 2060 roku. Z analizy wynika, że Polska w grupie nowych krajów członkowskich UE-9 nie wyróżniła się wysokim tempem zmniejszania luki gospodarczej do 2011 roku, niemniej od 2006 roku nastąpiło duże przyspieszenie procesu konwergencji, wzrost PKB per capita w latach 2005–2011 wynosił 29,7%, a średni wzrost PKB per capita w UE-27 – 4%. Prognozy zmniejszania luki gospodarczej w perspektywie średniookresowej są dla Polski dobre, a po 2020 roku będzie spadać stopa wzrostu PKB. Zdecydowane spowolnienie gospodarcze jest przewidywane po 2040 roku wraz z rosnącym tempem spadku liczby ludności. Istnieje więc realne zagrożenie ponownego wzrostu luki gospodarczej.

CHANCES OF CLOSING POLAND’S DEVELOPMENT GAP WITH THE European Union AND COUNTRIES OF THE BIGGEST ECONOMIC POTENTIAL IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF YEAR 2040
Summary
The article contains analysis of the process of Poland’s economic convergence with the EU and countries of the biggest economic potential in the years 1999–2011. The author also evaluates the possibilities of diminishing the development gap in the perspective of year 2040 and in some cases 2060. The research showed that Poland didn’t stand out within the group of 9 new member states in terms of closing the gap. However since 2006 the convergence process was faster and growth rate of Polish GDP per capita reached 29,7%, while the average growth ratio in the EU-27 was 4%. The mid-term forecasts for Poland are positive, but after 2020 the GDP growth rate will start to decline. More profound slowing down is to take place after 2040 mostly due to a sharp decline in population. So there is a real threat of further deepening the development gap.
