Streszczenie
Jednym z wyzwań globalnej gospodarki XXI wieku jest taka redefinicja modelu jej rozwoju, by sprzyjał on ograniczeniu postępującego rozwarstwienia społecznego i gospodarczego. Kryzys finansowy ostatnich lat uwypuklił bowiem nierównowagę w systemie gospodarka – środowisko – społeczeństwo. W tej sytuacji rozwój zrównoważony (RZ) traktowany jest jako alternatywa dla innych koncepcji rozwoju, na poziomie państw narodowych, regionalnych ugrupowań integracyjnych oraz gospodarki światowej jako całości. Celem opracowania jest próba oceny spójności działań podejmowanych w ramach zrównoważonego rozwoju na poziomie Unii Europejskiej na tle globalnych inicjatyw RZ. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy można stwierdzić, że ze względu na znaczące dysproporcje rozwojowe koncepcja Komisji ds. Zrównoważonego Rozwoju (Commission on Sustainable Development – CSD) monitorująca postęp w zakresie RZ sprawdza się w większym stopniu, niż konkretne wskaźniki ilościowe, np. Milenijne Cele Rozwoju (Millennium Development Goals – MDGs).

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AS A CHALLENGE FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION UNDER THE GLOBAL ECONOMY
Abstract
One of the challenges of the global economy of the twenty-first century is a redefinition of its development model, which favors the progressive reduction of social and economic inequalities. The recent financial crisis has highlighted the imbalance in the economy – environment – society system. In that situation the sustainable development (SD) is considered as an alternative to other concepts of development at multiple levels, namely, the state level, regional integration associations level and also at the global economy level.
The aim of the study is to assess the coherence of SD activities of EU, compared to similar global initiatives. The analysis shows that due to significant development disparities, the CSD concept, is more efficient in monitoring the progress of SD than specific quantitative indicators of the MDGs.
