Streszczenie
W artykule zaprezentowano zjawisko ubóstwa towarzyszące życiu zarówno społecznemu, jak i gospodarczemu. Pierwsza część pracy defi niuje i wyjaśnia zjawisko ubóstwa, ponadto przedstawia zasięg, dotkliwość i jego intensywność. Druga część koncentruje się na zaprezentowaniu problemu ubóstwa jako negatywnego wyniku funkcjonowania mechanizmu rynkowego oraz uwypukla związane z tym zjawiskiem problemy konkurencyjności gospodarek.

THE POVERTY AS THE EXTERNAL EFFECT OF FUNCTIONING OF A COMPETITIVE ECONOMY
Summary
In the article, I have presented the phenomenon of poverty in the social and economic context. Part one deals with methods of defi ning and measuring poverty as well as with divisions and classifi cations of national economies according to income groups, commonly applied in the literature. The second part introduces aspects of market economy functions, neoliberalism and the welfare state, and presents defect of their mechanisms in the light of the problem of poverty.
