FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT INFLOW AND CHANGES IN THE COMPOSITION OF COMMODITY EXPORTS (ANALYSIS BASED ON CENTRAL EUROPEAN EU MEMBER COUNTRIES AND BRIC COUNTRIES)

Summary

In the last two decades a great deal of foreign direct investments was located in Central European countries. This process has been initiated especially by lower labor costs, attractive geographical location, tax incentives and the availability of skilled and educated workforce, but nowadays the European Union enlargement seems to be the most significant reason for the increasing foreign direct investments inflow to this region. One of the expected effects of FDI inflow should be the prominent change in the composition of exports, especially the probable shift from the traditional and less competitive goods to the high-tech products. The main objective of this paper is to reveal any important relationships between FDI inflow and exports structure changes, using as examples the new EU member countries from Central Europe and BRIC countries (i.e. Brasil, the Russian Federation, India and China), which are considered as the fastest growing and perspective economies in the world.
